Reiki is a technique, which enables the practitioner to channel life force energy through them via a process called an attunement. As a recipient of Reiki you can choose to benefit from this energy to whatever extent you feel comfortable with. In essence you heal yourself through the energy available via the practitioner.

Reiki is not a religion, although it is spiritual in nature. You do not need to believe in order to benefit from or learn to use Reiki. It is practiced and taught in all cultures across the globe.

History of Reiki

Usui Reiki developed from Dr. Mikao Usui who was born in Japan in the mid 19th Century. Throughout his life he was concerned with finding ways to heal physical sickness in the way the Buddha had done after achieving enlightenment. He spent many years traveling throughout Japan staying at Buddhist temples and asking questions about healing to find that the ability to heal the body had been lost. During his travels he became friends with the abbot of a Zen monastery, learned Chinese and eventually Sanscript and it was in the Indian Sutras, that he discovered a formula for contacting a higher power that could bestow healing. Dr Usui then traveled to the holy mountain of Kurama where he fasted, meditated and followed the directions in the formula for 21 days. On the last night he saw a point of light coming towards him and in looking at it he realized that if her was to receive what the light had to offer he must allow the light to strike him with the risk that it might kill him. He took the risk and after being struck in the forehead and knocked unconscious by the light he rose out of his physical body and was shown beautiful bubbles of light filled with colors. In the bubbles were symbols. As he contemplated each symbol, he received an attunement for that symbol and knowledge on its use. This is how he was initiated into the use of the Reiki healing power.

Dr. Usui practiced and taught Reiki throughout Japan for the remainder of his life and before his transition around 1930 he gave the master attunement to 16 teachers one of which was D. Chujiro Hayashi who in his turn passed the complete teachings 13 Reiki Masters including, Hawayo Takata who was born in Hawaii.
